“Better Grades Campaign”

Executive Summary:
This proposal outlines a comprehensive approach to support foster children in improving
their behavior, academic performance, and school attendance. By setting individualized
goals, implementing targeted interventions, and engaging foster parents, teachers, and
HOH, this plan aims to create a supportive environment that fosters success both at home
and school.

Foster children often face unique challenges that impact their ability to succeed
academically and socially. These challenges can include trauma, instability, and a lack of
consistent support, which can result in behavioral issues, poor academic performance,
and low school attendance. This proposal seeks to address these challenges through a
structured, individualized plan that supports the child’s holistic development.

Objective:
To recognize and celebrate the child’s achievement and build momentum for continued
success.

Individualized Goal Setting: Each child will have a tailored plan that includes:
Behavior: Ex: Reduce instances of disruptive behavior in class/home by 50% over the next 3
months.
Grades: Ex: Improve grades in core subjects by at least one letter grade within the next quarter.

Attendance: Ex: Achieve a minimum of 95% attendance in school over the next quarter.

Interventions:
• Behavioral interventions
o Positive reinforcement: Implement rewards for positive behaviors both at
home and school.
o Behavioral contracts: Establish clear behavioral expectations and
consequences.
• Academic Interventions:
o Tutoring and Academic support: Get academic support from school in
subjects where child is struggling.

• Attendance Interventions:
o Morning routine support: Work with foster parents to establish a consistent
morning routine that helps the child prepare for school each day.
o Engagement with school: Foster a positive connection between the child and
their school by involving them in extracurricular activities or school-based
mentoring programs.
o Transportation assistance: If transportation is a barrier, arrange for reliable
transportation to and from school.

Monitoring:
Hold regular check-ins with child to track progress.
Use data from progress reports, behavioral logs, and attendance records to evaluate the
effectiveness of interventions.
Motivation:
• Set up a small reward if child shows improvement in grades during progress reports
(every 6 weeks)
• Introduce a “kindness jar”, every act of kindness or positive interaction, add a penny
to a jar, when jar is full, everyone participates in a group reward like a movie night or
a day at the park.
• Celebrate perfect attendance for the month with a certificate and small reward.
Incentive:

Progress demonstrated throughout the next 4 months will earn the child a ticket to the end-
of-semester celebration to be held in December 2024 at Main Event.
